Jarbridge, The Gem of Nevada

A 4-wheeling paradise, Jarbidge is nestled in a canyon along the Jarbidge River. ATV's in the summer and snowmobiles in the winter can ride from town to panoramic scenery at 8,000 ft. Hikers enjoy the various habitats as they walk into the Jarbidge Wilderness.

Jarbidge is a recreational paradise and a history buff's dream. Also dirt biking, horseback riding, packhorse trips, cross-country skiing, fishing, and hunting are some of the exciting activities people come to Jarbidge to enjoy. Many old buildings and mining ruins still exist today.

Sightseeing

Don't think you need a 4-wheel vehicle to have an enjoyable experience. The scenery from the main road is rewardable enough. From Rogerson, ID drive through North Canyon, have lunch in Jarbidge, and drive out through the South Canyon and on to Hwy. 22 which leads to Elko. It's a lovely daytrip.

Jarbidge Wilderness Area

Five miles south up the Jarbidge Canyon begins the Wilderness Trail. You'll experience mountain vistas, lush springs, forests, rivers, high desert terrain, and mountain lakes. While walking you'll see an old miner's cabin and mine and the Jarbidge and Emerald Lakes.

4-Wheeling

Bring your ATVs, jeeps, and 4-wheel drive pickups. Roads are geared from novice to expert abilities. The main road through the canyon follows the Jarbidge River from Murphy's Hot Springs to the South Canyon Road, a distance of approx. 21 miles. It's an easy drive through steep canyon walls (be sure to look for Window Rock), the Jarbidge townsite, and ending 1/3 mile from the Jarbidge Wilderness Area. Mining and hunters' roads lead to such places as the Indian Princess, vacated ranch houses, forested creeks, and majestic views at 8.000 ft.

Copper Basin

This panoramic area is full of wildflowers in the summer and colorful aspen trees in the fall. Be sure to look for the Basque sheepherders' influence found in the tree carvings, abandoned cabins, and bake ovens. The remnants of the Mission Cross Mine are located in Copper Basin. Gold Creek Road

This is another route into Jarbidge which leads to Wildhorse Reservoir or Mountain City; both located on Hwy. 225 out of Elko. Unavailable during the winter and early spring months.

Jarbidge Community Hall Even though the Hall was built in 1911, it is still used today for meetings, dances, church services, weddings, craft fairs, and bingo.

Jarbidge Townsite

Walk Main Street and see old miners' huts and stables, the Jarbidge Jail, Nevada Hotel, and former brothels.

Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge - Where the Desert Springs To Life!

Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge was named after the galleries of ash trees described in expedition notes from 1893. This desert oasis, a very rare and unique ecosystem, is recovering and playing an important role in global conservation efforts. The refuge strives to promote conservation management and awareness through environmental education, outreach programs, voluntarism and visitor services programs. We promote the 'no trace left behind' philosophy and ask our visitors to leave nothing behind and take only memories.

In 1952.........

The actions of a few dedicated conservationists, inspired President Truman to protect the Devils Hole pupfish and declaring Devils Hole as part of Death Valley National Park. This important historical event led the way to Ash Meadows becoming a refuge in 1984. The refuge was established, and is managed today, to protect threatened or endangered plants and animals; and their habitats. Although Devils Hole is within refuge boundaries it remains under the management of the National Park Service.

Site of International Importance!

The 24,000 acres of spring-fed wetlands and alkaline desert uplands is so unique that it is recognized as an wetland of international importance. Participants from various countries attended a convention in Ramsar, Iran in 1971, where they worked to provide a framework allowing countries to sign a treaty agreeing to voluntary international cooperation for wetland conservation. These wetland sites around the world are known as Ramsar sites and Ash Meadows was one of the first Ramsar sites in the United States.
