I think it dates back to the 80s. Beat Takeshi has a castle that this general wants to storm, and the troops are all contestants on the show. They go through this obstacle course that Takeshi set up, and the contestant that manages to tag Takeshi at the end get a huge cash prize. Only a few have ever won. It spawned a couple of video games, released only in Japan.
