I've pretty much always heard them called pigtails. Maybe braids sometimes. I did some Googling and found that most definitions of pigtails indicated the hair is braided. One source said unbraided pigtails were called bunches. Someone else was quoted as saying unbraided pigtails were called doggie tails. Are pigtails always braided or can they be unbraided? There is some debate on the subject.
